Venkat Ellur, 82, of Carmel, IN passed away peacefully at home on April 24, 2019. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Padma, and daughters Uma and Usha and granddaughters, Rani and Nina. He is also survived by a brother, Prakash, sister, Vijayama, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Munirama Setty and Gowramma Elluru, and 7 siblings. He was born in Denkanikota, India in 1937.
Venkat immigrated to the US in 1967 for advanced education, and lived in the Indianapolis area for over 45 years. Upon his graduation with triple Masters Degrees in mathematics, physics and nuclear physics culminating at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, he began a lifelong teaching career at Indianapolis Public Schools, teaching at John Marshall, Howe and Arlington High Schools.
Venkat will be remembered fondly for his contributions to the Indian Community, including many years of teaching educational classes to Indian youth and service to the India Association of Indianapolis, the Telegu Association of Indianapolis and the Hindu Temple of Indianapolis. Venkat was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He has generously supported the CMS Hostel in Bangalore, where he lived as a student, for which a room was named in his honor. He will be remembered for his patience, diplomacy and generous heart, as well as raising strong and independent daughters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hindu Temple of Indianapolis or the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Indiana.
Funeral Services will occur on Friday, April 26th, at Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Road. Visitation will be held from 3:30-6:30pm, followed by family tributes from 6:30-7:00pm. A Hindu Last Rites Service will occur from 7:00-8:00pm followed by a private cremation.
